  • What is some interesting research on the great vowel shift?

I'm writing two papers on the great vowel shift (because I must secretly hate myself and be very masochistic) and I was wondering if there are any really interesting articles, books or anything else out there someone knows of that might help me.

While I'm focusing it on social influence, anything interesting will do :)

  • Macro, micro or fundamentals of economics?

I'm pursuing a double major in sociology and psychology and am required to take a few extra classes. I want to take either macro, micro or fundamentals of economics but I'm not sure which.

Which do you think would be most beneficial to have taken (for my degree, for life, for fun, whatever)? Also, do you think there's a strong benefit to taking it as a lecture course, or would an online course be the same?

    Thanks!

  • If you could do anything in the pursuit of knowledge for one month, what would you do?

Maybe I'm looking for some inspiration for how to shake things up in my life, but I just came up with this question and thought I would like some perspective.

Don't nit-pick it, it's left deliberately ambiguous. Define knowledge as you will, assume whatever you want by the word "anything". Go with your gut, your initial thought.

    Drugs? Formal education? Travel? Seclusion?

Anything to gain knowledge. One month.

  • Can I be sued if I wasn't found at fault for a traffic collision?

In September I was in a traffic collision, going through an intersection someone came through perpendicularly and hit the front end of my vehicle totalling both our cars. The attending officers declared it was an accident due to environmental factors (it was a very sunny and foggy morning around dawn).

Last week I received a phone call from the other drivers insurance provider saying that between the two insurance companies, I was found to be at fault and my insurance will only cover $10,000 of the $14,600 in damage and they want me to pay the remainder. They offered to reduce it by half if I can pay in full or I could set up a payment plan, but told me that I was legally obligated to. Is that the case? I don't have the money, and currently I'm a student so I have no actual income.

If I'm unable to pay, can they sue me? If they do and I lose, what will happen if I still can't pay? Is it true that I am legally obligated by the insurance companies determination of who is at fault?

  • What are careers that help people?

I had intended on joining the military, and I had looked into becoming a fire fighter or paramedic. This has been my plan for a while now, until two months ago I was in a car accident and damaged my knee. The dr said it could take a year to heel, but there's no way of knowing for certain if it will ever heel completely.

This might sound like crap, but about a year ago I realized that I'm only happy when I'm helping people and I really want to find a way to help people all the time. I don't care about the money, I can live on very little.

  • What are ways to help an injured knee heel?

Two months ago I was in a car accident where my left knee was impacted by the steering wheel column of my car. There were no breaks or ligament damage, but the ortho I went to said there might be cartilage or tendon damage.

He said if it still hurt after six weeks I should come back for an MRI, which would then mean either physical therapy or surgery. Neither of which I can afford, so here I am.

After nine weeks, it's still swollen, slightly discolored, it pops and tingles a lot, hurts frequently but more often than not it just feels like it doesn't want to work at all.

Are there any exercises I might be able to do to help it heel? Any websites of physical therapy? Any personal tips anyone could lend me?

  • Is there a way to become a college instructor/adjunct without a master's?

That seems to be the *only* requirement. Would there be any certifications that one might acquire to be able to get a part time teaching position? Perhaps a bachelor's plus a teaching certificate, or even teaching experience?

Or is this a federally mandated requirement?

  • What would you do if you could do anything?

Imagine you have no bills, no family, no responsibilities at all. You are totally free to do whatever you want. You have no ties to anything, or anyone. No one to disappoint, no one to praise your accomplishments. No one but yourself, anyway.

Let's say you have $6000 in your bank account, a car and nothing else. What do you do?

  • What are possible knee injuries from a car accident with numbness as a symptom?

I was in a car accident on Tuesday where the inside of my left knee hit the steering wheel column. I went to the hospital and the x-rays found no breaks. I know it's only been a six days, but what's concerning is that there is a big section around the impact sight (about three inches wide) that is totally numb. I tried taking a pen and poking all around it and across it, that section is completely void of any feeling.

What could cause that? Should I see another doctor, or give it a few more days? All things considered, it doesn't hurt that bad. There's some strange pulling inside when I move it sometimes, and when I don't have it wrapped it doesn't like to work (feels like it suddenly becomes jello).

    Any ideas?

  • Topic ideas for a controversial, argumentative research paper?

I need to write two papers for my English Comp class on one topic, and I'm having trouble thinking of a topic. The requirements are that is it a controversial topic that can be argued and that it is a recent topic (within the past two years). One paper is a research/argument paper and the other is an informative analysis paper. The topics need to have sufficient data for and against them.

I want to do something interesting, but something so involved that I'll lose myself in the research side of it. Topics that fit the bill are things like abortion or marijuana, however those are very typical and would come off as a cop out.

    Anyone have any ideas?

  • Linear equations in two variable?

I'm working on studying for a placement test. One of the questions on the practice packet is:

Point A (-4, 1) is in the standard (x,y) coordinate plane. What must be the coordinates of point B so that the line x=2 is the perpendicular bisector of AB?

I don't even understand the question. Its category is listed as a linear equation in two variables, honestly I don't know what that means either.

    Help? :(

  • why is x-5 a factor of x2(sqd)-x-20?

This question was on a sample placement test, and I don't understand how they came to the answer. The question is:

Which of the following is a factor of the polynomial x2-x-20?

The '2' is actually indicating that the first x is squared, but I don't know how to shrink the 2 :(

    The correct answer is x-5

Where did the 5 come from? I don't get it at all...

  • What did Antonio Machado mean by "Only wakes by the sea"?

What did Antonio Machado mean with the word "wakes" in this poem:

    "Wanderer, your footsteps are

    the road, and nothing more;

    wanderer, there is no road,

the road is made by walking.

By walking one makes the road,

    and upon glancing back

    one sees the path

that never will be trod again.

    Wanderer, there is no road--

    Only wakes upon the sea."

A friend of mine and I were having a debate :) Thanks very much!

  • What is the average term of a small business loan? What is the average interest rate?

I'm considering applying to get a SML, preferably a microloan of about 15,000. How long are the average loan terms? What about average interest rates? Any pros or cons anyone would like to add?

  • What's a good low impact work out for beginners?

My mom is getting her hips replaced and we're looking for a good, low impact work out for both of us to do together to help her recover and get back in shape. She is 52, and I am 22. We're trying to find something we can learn, like Tai Chi. Any ideas?

  • What career in these science fields would be best to pursue?

I'm 23 and want to attend college, but I'll be paying it myself (plus loans) because I don't have any family or savings to help out. I need to find something that is worth it, and won't sink me into dept and depression like so many others. So, don't tell me "You should just start classes and see what you like"

The fields I'm most interested in are marine biology, quantum physics, astronomy, and entomology. Other than research and teaching, does anyone know of other career paths in any of those fields? And about how much would one in such a field make starting?

Every other subject I've considered just seems boring comparatively, those just completely enthrall me. I'd really like to make a career out of one or more of them, and I'd like to know what my options are.

  • What's the difference between Spanish in America and Spanish in Europe?

I can't speak Spanish at all, but I lived in South Florida for a while, and can hear that there is a difference between someone from Cuba or South America speaking Spanish vs someone from Spain. People have told me that it's often hard for American Spanish speakers to understand European Spanish speakers and many American Spanish speakers tell me there's a huge difference in translation. What's the difference? I'm asking because I'm considering learning Spanish.

  • How much goitrogenic food can someone with hypothyroidism eat daily?

I have very bad hypothyroidism, and (as expected) I am extremely over-weight. My endocrinologist told me to avoid goitrogenic foods, but most of them are fruits and vegetables I would want to eat to lose weight. Are there moderate amounts I can eat? How can I find out how much?

  • What can be done about a broken tooth with no money?

My boyfriend broke one of his molars last week. When I looked in his mouth, I could see a chunk of one missing down the the gum. At first, he was just worried about eating and it didn't hurt. After about four days he started complaining it was hurting but ibuprofen helped. Now it's been over a week and he says it hurts all the time and the ibuprofen stopped working. He's tried several brands of the over the counter numbing creams and none of those are helping. I can tell he's in a lot of pain.

Neither of us have health/dental insurance or any money to spare. Would going to the ER help anything; would they even be able to do anything? If he does nothing, what will happen? Could it be an infection? How back could that be? We even considered pulling it out ourselves (if it gets worse), then going to the ER straight away and having them sew it up. We're afraid that it's connected to his jaw and might damage too much if I just yank it out.

    Anything would be helpful.

  • What happens if someone with untreated narcolepsy takes a sleeping pill?

I know some people with narcolepsy go misdiagnosed and are treated insomnia. Since narcolepsy neurological and disrupts one's REM, and sleeping pills typically depress one's central nervous system and increase melatonin would it increase the narcoleptic symptoms such as sleep paralysis? Or would it just help them sleep normally?
