What did Antonio Machado mean by "Only wakes by the sea"?

What did Antonio Machado mean with the word "wakes" in this poem:

"Wanderer, your footsteps are

the road, and nothing more;

wanderer, there is no road,

the road is made by walking.

By walking one makes the road,

and upon glancing back

one sees the path

that never will be trod again.

Wanderer, there is no road--

Only wakes upon the sea."

A friend of mine and I were having a debate :) Thanks very much!

    This is such an interesting poem!

    As I understand it, is we all walk alone,

    choosing our path along the way, a personal,

    and maybe lonely pathway.

    The bit you're referring to, I see it as, even after

    taking our chosen path, we may still end up with

    'nothing', and we have to make of our life what we will...
