Topic ideas for a controversial, argumentative research paper?

I need to write two papers for my English Comp class on one topic, and I'm having trouble thinking of a topic. The requirements are that is it a controversial topic that can be argued and that it is a recent topic (within the past two years). One paper is a research/argument paper and the other is an informative analysis paper. The topics need to have sufficient data for and against them.

I want to do something interesting, but something so involved that I'll lose myself in the research side of it. Topics that fit the bill are things like abortion or marijuana, however those are very typical and would come off as a cop out.

Anyone have any ideas?

Update:

Ok, health care, drugs, energy, abortion, economics, education, and immigration are all great ideas but also very broad.

Does anyone have any specific ideas for a topic? Such as a psychological study being done that has mixed reviews? I need it to be one specific thing.

How about the Darfur genocides? That you would be able to study into Africa's history of mass homicide/rape, hyperlink it to the thought that the sector promised by no means to have a repeat of the WW2 holocausts, and enquire into why no person has been competent to do so much about it. It can be no longer only an ethical subject (which gives you room so as to add goal or subjective judgements, as you please), but a devout (seem into the factors!), historic, political and mainly, social and psycological one too. It is also one who has been ONGOING for a number of years, perhaps allowing a conclusion that focuses on what would and will have to be finished about it.
