What are careers that help people?

I had intended on joining the military, and I had looked into becoming a fire fighter or paramedic. This has been my plan for a while now, until two months ago I was in a car accident and damaged my knee. The dr said it could take a year to heel, but there's no way of knowing for certain if it will ever heel completely.

This might sound like crap, but about a year ago I realized that I'm only happy when I'm helping people and I really want to find a way to help people all the time. I don't care about the money, I can live on very little.

Update:

I meant for the first paragraph to indicate that because of my knee injury I can't pursue my any of my original plans. The military wouldn't accept me, and it wouldn't be safe for me to become a fire fighter/paramedic with the potential of my knee giving out.

There are enough hospital workers, most people I go to school with are in a nursing or medical science program. Besides, I don't know anyone who works in such a field who feels like they help people. It seems to me like it's 90% red tape and procedure to 10% helping people who will just be angry at you anyway.

Politics is too indirect, and also too much red tape to try and help people while wading through people who are angry at me.
