I'm Ed, a nurse for 13 years and a whole bunch of other things before that. I'm married for the past 20 years to the girl next door. I work at a county detox near Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA and also volunteer at a street clinic for the homeless. In my spare time I play computer games, read lots of books, watch The Discovery Channel, and work as a volunteer nurse for the American Red Cross. I love cats, coyotes, crows, and just about anything with fur, feathers or fins. Politically I'm quite liberal, and I can rant and rave for hours about the previous Administration. I apologize profusely to the rest of the world for the mess we've made of everything. Maybe things will be better now with Obama, but the effects of Cheney, Rove, and their puppet George the Evil, will take years to reverse... sigh...

  • Why don't Christians see the Bible as myth?

Christians see the Greek and Roman myths as myths.

They see the Norse myths as myths.

They see Egyptian myths as myths.

The Bible is full of stories of people being made of dust; people being made of parts of other people; an impossible world-wide flood; a woman turning to, of all things, salt; a woman with a virgin birth; a man who walks on water; giants, monsters, unrealistic tales with moral lessons.

All of these stories have very similar parallels in other groups of myths, most older than the Hebrew and Christian myths.

Like other myths they serve to explain things the science of the day couldn't

Like other myths, they contain stories designed solely to give a group a clear identity and self concept to separate them from other groups and justify feelings of superiority.

Like other myths they contain heroes, monsters and villains with larger-then-life deeds and even super-powers.

Like other myths they contain representations of the world that don't exist, they are unrealistic and unashamedly so.

Like other myths their origins were poorly documented, with no corroborating evidence, and already old enough when written down that evidence AGAINST them was tough to track down.

Like other myths, they are skimpy on detail, just hitting the high points the storytellers wanted.

Like other myths, they are blatantly contradictory and wildly inconsistent.

Like other myths, their ability to correctly prophecy ends in the distant past

Like other myths, there are hints of a grander world that is no more, where people lived hundreds of years, giants walked the Earth, the gods spoke to man, and miracles were commonplace.

Like other myths, they cannot be reconciled to modern scientific knowledge.

And finally, they get angry and offended when the similarities between their myths and other myths are pointed out to them. They claim disrespect and offense... then tell the Native American that the god-spirits they still worship today are nothing but superstitious myth.

What more do you need? The Bible is a collection of myths, all targeted to certain audiences for specific purposes, filled with fantastic claims that cannot be literal, and sprinkled with enough actual history to give the myth some credibility (the best lies contain the most truth, and people believe)...

  • Is GE Goldstar dishwasher okay to use after being idle for 3 years?

For various reasons, my dishwasher has not been used in 3 years. Will the seals still be good? Are there any other potential problems? Some have told me I will need a new dishwasher. Is this true?

We are replacing sink, faucet, disposal (and possibly dishwasher) and adding water filtration system. I am totally inept mechanically and will be having a pro install it all. Any words of wisdom? THANK YOU!!!

  • My laptop keeps saying "We are ready!" Any idea why?

A few weeks ago I started hearing a male voice announcing, "We are ready!" at irregular intervals. sometimes it comes out every few minutes, and other times a couple days go by between pronouncements. Scans reveal no bugs, trojans, malware, etc... but I did reinstall AIM 6.0 at about the same time.

Does anyone know what this is all about? Thank you!

  • Is the supply of natural amethyst running out?

A gemcutter at a Renaissance Faire yesterday told me that amethyst supplies are being mined out, and due to the shrinking supply, amethyst will be pulled off the market at the end of 2008. I am doubting his claim and Google has yielded no recent data on the subject. Anyone know the truth?

  • Cannot reply to messages sent to me from other Yahoo Answers users...?

When I hit the "Reply to this message" button, it tells that the user who sent me the message is not a Yahoo Answers user. This function used to work just like it was supposed to, and now I cannot reply to ANY messages sent by these other users. Is this a bug or did I screw something up? And does anyone know how to contact Yahoo Answers to report bugs and request direct tech support? I tried the help function but only got the pre-worded FAQs with no apparent way to contact them... Thanks!!!!!
