Is the supply of natural amethyst running out?

A gemcutter at a Renaissance Faire yesterday told me that amethyst supplies are being mined out, and due to the shrinking supply, amethyst will be pulled off the market at the end of 2008. I am doubting his claim and Google has yielded no recent data on the subject. Anyone know the truth?

Of course any natural material which is taken from the earth is a resource that is getting less. Quartz, however, is among the most common minerals in the world and amethyst is not an uncommon variety of quartz so I doubt if it will run out even in your great, great, great grand children's time so don't worry too much. Market traders will give you any old garbage to get you to part with your cash.

Of course the supplies are finite, but the reserves are likely to be huge. I refuse to believe that global demand of amethyst is so high as to completely exhaust all of the natural reserves.

Like anything supply comes and goes, then someone will find a good load for a while. It is a very common stone. It should fluctuate a number of times by 2008.

I assure you that the gemcutter was completely full of crap and was only trying to talk you into making a purchase. Amethyst is produced by the ton in Brazil.
