using a circular saw inside house?

Can you use a circular saw inside a house, I want to cut my sofa into 3 pieces so I can throw it away, but my dad won't let me borrow his saw because he you can't use a circular saw inside the house. Is that true or does he not want me to cut up my sofa?

Yes, you can use it indoors. It will make a huge mess, but you can minimize this by draping the area you are working in with dropcloths or sheets of painter's plastic. We remodeled our entire home while still living in it so we learned the blessing of draping off areas of the house to reduce the mess. My husband used all kinds of tool inside, including his circular saw. I drew the line at his table saw though....he had to keep that in the garage! :) Still, we had to shopvac every single day and it got old fast.

However, it is likely that the fabric on the sofa will snag in the blade or you will hit a metal strap or screw you can't see to avoid. Both of these will ruin the saw and potentially cause an injury--this is probably why your dad doesn't want you to do it.

All (or most) sofas are assembled locally after shipping----if you'll look at the bottom of your sofa, there are most likely several screws or bolts that hold the arms and back on to the bottom. Loosen these and you should be able to remove portions of the sofa in sections. I used to work for a furniture store and went to the local warehouse several times. During those visits, I regularly saw sofas being assembled from upholstered parts in a shipping container. You should not have to cut it up--just take it apart. If you don't see the screws on the bottom...there may be a piece of fabric stretched across the bottom hiding them...tear this off to find the screws.

The ONLY issue with using a circular saw inside is the saw dust. That said, I think it is a poor choice for destroying a sofa. A sledgehammer would be my choice. The saw won't handle the padding well.

You can use a circular saw inside a house, but it will make a sawdust mess. Also, you can catch a peice of metal in the sofa and cut yourself badly. I would use a handsaw and break a little sweat.

First off, get some clear plastic painters drop cloths. use a ladder and tape to tack it up to the ceiling of your kitchen, just around the area of where you want to cut. I.E. make a surround of clear plastic from the ceiling to the floor, to contain the dust. Hopefully you have a dry vac, as you will need that. use a skill saw with a dry cut masonary blade. mark out your cut, with a tape line, and start up your dry vac (helper needed for this) and slowly very slowly cut through the granite slab. You can even use a spray bottle of water, so that the dust will be wet, and not fly all around. If YOU do all of this, the dust will be contained better. And one other thing that is very important. Always wear a dust mask to keep the dust out of your lungs. The skill saw will take some time to cut through the granite, so be patient and go slow. 30 years in construction this is also why you use the dry vac at the same time.

It will make a big mess, like dust all through the house. Also it would be dangerous.

Say your ripping through a little cushioning and maybe some wood, then suddenly you hit a metal spring it kicks back and you cut your arm off. I would say listen to pops, and not do it.

Good luck and try to be a little more safe there lefty!!

Don't do it unless you know how to use the saw. That said, does your dad not want you to do this in "his" house? If that is the case, don't do it.
