When material that has been alive decomposes, it produces carbon dioxide, so yes, you are destroying the Earth if you believe in man made global warming and see it as a problem.

Some greenhouse gases, yes. Do you have a hundred acres of compost, next to a stream?

    No it's not "green ".

    But it's needed

Composting takes organic material, and breaks it down into compost, or humus. The process emits CO2 and water vapor. However, bear in mind that any material which is composted probably would break down anyway, and emit the same amount of CO2 in any case.

As far as water pollution, runoff from a large-scale composting site can sometimes be an issue, particularly if it has a lot of nutrients in it.

But in general, composting is considered an environmentally-friendly way to handle organic waste materials, and return organic matter and nutrients to the soil.

If you consider alternatives, such as sending, say, food waste or yard waste to a landfill, there it will produce methane as it breaks down anaerobically. It's also very costly.

Composting causes no more greenhouse gas production than landfilling and should not pollute the water, if done correctly.

Composting is a practical and environmentally friendly way of caring for your vegetable garden, flower beds, and lawn. Composting involves placing organic waste into a compost pile, where bacteria and other microorganisms break it down and turn it into dark and crumbly fertilizer.
