How are some people able to walk outside bare footed every where they go?

I can't for the life of me understand how some people are able to walk outside bare footed every where they go? I just don't get it. There are sticks, needles, pebbles, broken glass, and etc all over roads, side walks, and parking lots. Despite that, some people are able to walk every where with out the rugged protection of shoes.

Because they are use to doing just that, and the souls of their feet become hard. Anyone can do that, but it does take time to get the souls of the foot hard enough to do it on any type of surface.

I grew up in Hawaii. Went barefoot EVERYWHERE for as long as I could remember... The soles of my feet were pretty tough. Had to wear some sort of foot "covering at school, so flip-flops were common, but as soon as school was over, off they came. In my teens, the family moved to the mainland... and shoes, pretty much all the time, became "normal". My feet are no longer tough.

There was a guy in my city who was quite well known for not wearing shoes for about 40 years. Apparently your feet toughen up and you almost get a sort of sixth sense not to step on glass or dog mess. The guy was known as Pete Feet.

Friends who have done this as youngsters say that the feet soles get calloused and toughen up the more you do this.
