How do you keep track of scores while trap shooting?

Okay I understand the concept that your score is just how many targets you hit.

But what i mean is when you're actually out on the trap field shooting, and you can't really carry a pen & paper and you don't have time to pull out your phone and make notes, what tricks do you use so that you can remember your score when the round is over?

This would be just a casual shooting trip to the local sportsman gun club with friends, not a formal competition, so there's no scorekeeper. But I want to track my scores so I can see if I'm improving.

Last time I tried to just keep track of how many I hit from each station but by the end of the round I feel like was off by one or two. I was thinking of wearing cargo shorts or a jacket and after each shot I either put the shell in my right or left pocket depending on hit or miss, then I can count the shells at the end of the round.

Anyone have any better ideas or tricks for tracking trap scores without a dedicated scorekeeper?

Yes, you can record your score for a station on your notepad while another shooter is shooting. Or, ask another shooter to keep up with your hits and record them afterward.

Don't count the hits, only the misses. You should hit more then miss. Subtract that from 25 targets that make a round. Same thing for rifle or pistol shooting. Subtract points that are not bullseyes, and subtract from a perfect score. ex. -1 for a 9 ring, -2 for an 8 ring and so on.

I do it in my head for Trap or Skeet shooting. Same thing the scorer does. Wouldn't it be foolish to sit there and count 20 hits ? Count 5 misses, and write down a score of 20.

  • I remember shooting out over the water into long island sound from one od the oldest yacht clubs in Westchester County during the winter. You can't put lead in the water like that anymore, but back then, youd havehave your shotguns and the bar would be open or you'd have a flask. Everyone would be out in the cold shooting.

Back then, even a novice ought to be a pretty good shot that it would be easier to count the misses, so 1 out 25 or 98 out of a hundred.

Just remember. Once you get better, you'll start missing fewer birds and that will make it easier to remember. Or, if you're like me when I started, it was easier to remember the number hit, not missed, as it was the smaller number.

We always had a scorekeeper. But, it can be done without a separate scorekeeper
