Why is relocation a death sentence for most squirrels. I read it's hit and miss with tree squirrels.I trapped three gray squirrels?

Update:

I took them about a half a mile away and released them. Will they come back? Will they survive?

Update 2:

These is a busy road that they will have to cross. I haven't seen as many squirrels since.

Unless there's a river or a highway between your house and the location you dropped those squirrels off they will be back within a day or 2.

They will survive unless they are still dependent upon the mother to take care of them. The mother will abandon them if they have human scent. If they are fully grown and know how to take care of themselves, they'll be just fine.
