What's wrong with this Imac?

Someone is selling their 2009 IMac. He says it has a bad hard drive. He says," I booted off an external hard drive that had OSX installed on it and it worked fine, that's why I believe it's just a busted hard drive."

Do you think this is just a hard drive issue? If so, do you think I can just replace the hard drive and install the operating system? Is this all I need to do?

Thanks

Seems like, though without looking at it I wouldn't like to guess.

If it is working normally when starting from the external drive then it sounds like it just needs the internal drive replacing. If there were any other problems with the computer they would still show when booting from the external drive.
