How to check compatibility between cpu and ram?

I understand that a motherboard that uses DDR4 would also need to use DDR4 ram, but how to I determine if the ram I purchase is compatible with my cpu? Is it how much ram the cpu can handle?

you choose a cpu that works with the motherboard.  then you choose ram that also works with the motherboard.  the ram/cpu combination will then work just fine.  maximum size is controlled by the mobo ... mobo makers don't bother making them capable of more ram than the cpus can support

Go to the motherboard manufacturers website and check the  Memory QVL (qualified vendor list).

compatibility is ALL with the motherboard. the motherboard's programming determines EVERYTHING that can be connected to it, capacities, speeds, formats...everything.

which CPU only determines the speed of the computer, not of the RAM.
