When traveling through canada?

I am planning a road trip from Detroit MI to a city in New York called Macedon. I would like to take the easy route by driving through Canada, but I have only been to Canada once and it was with someone who knows Canada well and we didn't go far from the Windsor tunnel. Do I need to exchange currency for when I stop for gas and I think there's tolls on the way?

I would be ok with driving through the states and taking an additional hour to reach my destination, but it's all toll-ways there, and that adds up over a couple hundred miles.

Well, 342 miles later (based on a Google Maps estimate), you're going to need fuel and I can see your concern - you ask a good question.

When you stop for gas, you can pay using your Credit or Debit Card. Just make sure your card issuer knows you'll be going through Canada for a certain day and then going back into the nation through New York State. If in the case that you are strictly carrying Cash and avoiding Credit/Debit, that's fine... when you're closer to the border and major tourist-friendly cities (like Windsor, Hamilton, and Niagara Falls), merchants will be more likely to accept US Dollars. On the other hand, "small towns" and areas further away from the border will be less likely to accept US Dollars. The best bet is to grab some CAD$, probably CAD$150, good for two fillups and a meal, and you'll be on your way through Canada. The opposite applies to New York State accepting CAD, but probably more strained to Niagara vicinity and Champlain (for QC Port of Entry.)

There are no tolls just so long as you avoid the 407 Express Toll Route ("ETR"), the dreaded and controversial highway that causes problems, especially for visitors. Hint: 407 takes you to Toronto... a far stretch away from your destination.

You have one toll each way via Queenston-Lewiston Bridge, payable by Cash in CAD/USD. Consider the E-Z Pass if you find yourself doing this trip more often - You will have tolls in the New York State Thruway and its spurs.
