If you're coloring white frosting or batter, start with red.
One drop at a time, mixing well after each drop. Add more if you want the shade darker.
ALWAYS start with the lighter color when mixing to make another. You can't lighten a darker color enough to make it right.

With food coloring, what two colors make pink?

You can buy pink food coloring, otherwise just limit the amount of red you use. Start with one or 2 drops and mix before you add any more.
Depending on what you're coloring, you can also try 1 drop of blue with multiple drops of red. Too much though and it will go lavender/purple.
