How many generations back do you have photos of your ancestors?

I only recently received photos of some of my great grandparents. In most cases its only one photo. I have a photo of one of my 2nd great grandparents but that's it. For those who have researched their ancestry do you have photos of your ancestors many generations back?

Update:

I should clarify that I meant images, whether digital or actual photographs. The photographs that I have of my great grandparents & GG grandmother were all scanned & emailed to me, or taken with my digital camera from an actual photo and then printed. I have no "original" photos of anyone beyond my grandparents in my actual possession but I have printed photos from digital images.

I have a picture of my 5-greats-grandmother who was born in 1775. She died in 1858 so it was taken sometime before that. She's sitting with her son, my 4-greats-grandfather, who was born in 1796. My cousin has the original and gave me a copy. That's the oldest one I have, but I also have some more recent ones (3-greats and 2-greats). I started out with only pictures of my grandparents, and the rest I've gotten through cousins I tracked down, or who found me on genealogy sites.

  • Two generations. But then, my grandparents were born in the 1860s. Still, an ancestor of mine was born in Virginia in 1769, died in Michigan in 1868. So, of course, I wonder what photos might exist (daguerrotypes or whatever form) that I do not know about.

A brother of mine died last month, and I went to his house to help his widow (my wife's sister) sort through the mess. I was fortunate to gain some old photos from the early 1900s, including my Mom's Dad, and other photos up through 1940. Some of the photos really show stern folks, but then no instamatics back when.

As soon as I have a chance, I always scan any old photo; that way, I have a better chance of the photo surviving (original or digital).

All I can say is, "It's fun!" to see what they looked like.

I have a lovely photograph of one set of my Great grandparents with the majority of their children in a family group which would have been taken around 1908, and several photographs of the next generation back as clearly there was a photographer who took photographs of 'life in the village', so my great great grandfather who was a thatcher working on a cottage roof, another of a great great great grandmother holding a horse while her husband( my ggg grandfather) the village Blacksmith was fitting a shoe, with three of their children ( one of which is my gg grandmother) played, another great great great grandfather standing outside his home he was a master stone mason and his house was built with various 'samples' showing work he could do, this is a tourist attraction even now, a beautiful stone built cottage, which he seemed to use to market and advertise his skills.............. thos photo's are really lovely to have............

I won't deal in generation numbers, since that is too flexible. In other words, someone born in the 1850s, for YOU, could be 5 generations back. For me (because of looonggg generations), 1830s is only 2 generations back. (My mother being born when my grandfather was 70; me being born when she was 40).

On my daughter's lineage through their father, they have ancestors born in the same time frame, but had tintypes done in the 1880s, which we now have converted to photos. They are dateable, since the father died in 1890 and he is included. For my daughters, that works to their gr gr gr grandparent. Short generations on that line.

My point is that I have many photos of ancestry (my work including my kids, not just myself) that date to around 1900. If that pic is someone who was elderly at the time, it "works" much further back but it is of the same time frame.

It is always cool when you luck into finding pics that you didn't know were out there. I have even found a limited number of photos uploaded online that turn out to be related. The more you network with distant cousins, the better your odds of getting them. It used to be that a family member might have them, and "hoarded" them. Today, with scanners, they can be shared at no cost at all and everyone wins.

initially, discover that information you talk approximately! None of those occurrences won't be able to be defined via simple means, and no genuine information has been shown. Our ancestors left not something in the way of information the two and the difficulty is somewhat plenty even if if this is genuine or fake! i'm specific in case you provides conclusive information of alien visitation somebody would be chuffed so you might bury it able of your figuring out on. whilst will you flying saucer enthusiasts settle for that even with all the severe Definition cameras etc international, nevertheless no one can produce a 0.5 respectable, clean and unequivocal image of an alien spacecraft? i'm afraid heresay and unsubstantiated claims do not make information! I anticipate various thumbs down from saucer nuts.

I have a photo of a gr gr grandfather who was born in 1837. Being 78 in a few days I probably can't go back as far as you in family generations but further back in time.

The oldest ones are of my Great Great Grand father, until recently I found one online of my Fourth great grandfather. It is a great gift from online geneology sites to find family pictures we never see anywhere else.
