Thoreau's night in jail?

I'm having difficulty understanding Thoreau's piece "Civil Disobedience". Why does he include his personal story about his night in jail?

Thanks to those who answer! :D

    Thoreau Jail

He's turning the notion of jail as a penalty for civil disobedience on its head. All those details about his personal experience in jail (treating it as a calm night of meditation and a chance to observe another citizen) illustrate that being locked in a room is hardly a deterrent or penalty when matters of conscience are at stake.
