Can someone tell me if I understand the point of these conventions?
Am I right to think it's to hear people who are paid to say nice things about the guy they're endorsing and mean things about the guy they are running against for 3 days?

That is accurate - yes.
44% of American (Gallup) say conventions are a waste of time and money.

The purpose of the DNC is to add some humor in these tough economic times:
Hearing the DNC audience crap their pants in anger over removing God was hysterical and is going to be ALL OVER the airwaves when election time rolls around. It's already a YouTube hit.
