Do I have to take Driver's Ed to get my permit?

I live in California and I don't know if I have to take Driver's Ed to get the permit. My parents got theirs by just reading the Manual and then taking the test. But all my friends took the long route and went to an online course then behind the wheel training.

So what are the steps to getting a permit and do you need to take drivers ed. Thanks.

I live here in the Golden State as well. If you are 15 1/2 - 16 years of age you are required to take Driver's Education which is either offered at your school or can be taken online. Next you are required to have proof of enrollment in Driver's Training (behind the wheel lessons with an instructor). Note you do not have to complete Driver's Training but you do need proof of being enrolled and have taken your first lesson. You take all this to the DMV and take your written test and your driving instructor (from Driver's Training) signs your permit after the first lesson and now you have your Learner's (Provisional) Permit. You must have this for 6 months and have your parents sign off 50 hours of driving experience (10 of which of to be at night) before you are eligible for a Driver's License.

You need to take driver's ed to get your permit. I think you have to take a driver's ed course if you are under 17 1/2 years, but I definitely know that if you are 15 1/2 or 16 years old, you must take a driver's ed course. A recommended website for online driver's ed is www.DriverEdToGo.com and while registering you can enter the code X2D-D38-BMB to get a $3 discount off the course price, which is $17.50.

you dont need too but its a good idea to do before you get your license and there is a drivers manual you can get from the dmv study it good because you'll need to take a written test to get your permit

I don't think you need it but its probably best if u get so that way you know the rules of the and if u have any question u can ask the instructor rather than just a friend who more than likely won't know
