Difference between a volume and a season?

I'm on Amazon looking to buy some DVD series, but I'm unsure of the difference between a volume and a season. Amazon has volume 1-6, but they only have seasons 4-6. Both are released by Lions Gate so it only adds to the confusion.

Volume usually means half a season or not every episode

Season = well one season (episodes 1-24) Volume = Maybe Seasons 1 and 2 so (episodes 1-48) Probably some extra content. Also don't waste money on DVDs, for 9 bucks a month you can stream a bunch of movies and TV, they have all 8 seasons of Family guy I believe, plus All the seasons of South Park, Futurama, and even King of the Hill I think. All this streams to your TV.
