It's bad for the catalytic converter. It clogs it up. If you are in a state that requires a pollution check he will have to replace the catalytic converter, around $200 - $400.

Otherwise oil in the gas is good for the engine. Just causes sparkplugs to foul sooner, and it does increase pollution, even if a catalytic converter was not required.

The catalytic converter burns excess fuel so it won't pollute. The material inside the catalytic converter will not work if it is coated with oil. So if you have an internal oil leak where your car is burning "blow-by" (oil that escapes into the intake) oil you have to replace the catalytic converter.

BTW, there really aren't any lawnmowers that use oil mixed with the gas. It is usually used by weed eaters and other 2 cycle motors. A car engine is a 4 cycle motor, like a lawnmower.

Some people mix oil with gas in one container and use it for both the lawnmower and weed eater so they don't have to have two cans of gas. It doesn't hurt the lawnmower but you should change the sparkplug every year.

I almost forgot... he needs to replace the oxygen sensor. It is damaged by oil. It determines how much fuel/oxygen mixture your car gets. When it is coated with oil or burned oil, it doesn't work right and your car will run rough and get poor gas mileage. It's not too expensive to replace.

BTW, normal oil fuel mixture for 2 cycle engines will not produce any noticable smoke. It's usually 1 part per 40 parts of fuel. You have to have 1 part to 3 parts of fuel before you notice smoke. IOW, over 10 times the amount of oil normally found in lawn equipment. However, you can smell the oil burning.

What's oil doing in a gas can? whoops been there done that. Id recommend rinsing out the can with a squirt of gas before putting and amount of gas in it.

YOU know about a dimes worth that is now maybe $2.00 just kidding, let your eyes be the judge and shake the gas around in the can before dumping If it looks dirty to you, I wouldn't want it in my car. The oil probably wouldn't hurt anything but Stuff in the oil that may have got into it might. Id be more worried about fuel pump than the engine. definitely look for signs of beaded up water and KEEP THIS STUFF OUT. Fact is there probably shouldn't be enough oil in a gas can to bother the gas or what ever you put the gas in. a rinse will help get dirt and yucks out. BTW a little oil in your gas isn't a bad thing like 2 or 3 spoons full any more than this I dint believe would help anything and more than a pint per tank full could carbon up spark plugs quickly.

If you drove the car for a few thousand miles on mixed gas you might have fouling problems but to use enough to get to the filling station won't hurt a thing. The condensation and debri that can accumulate in a gas can is another matter. Don't drain the entire can into the gas tank because water and most dirt will be in the bottom of the can.

You will have a cloud of smoke coming out the exhaust caused by the oil in the gas, it wont hurt it but the spark plugs may pack it in. and you could get pulled over by the police because the smoke will be reaaly bad, don't do it. may even cause an accident. for a one off it will be ok to drive.

You make more pollution and the smoke is bad to breathe. It should not hurt the lawn mower, but it might foul the plugs. When you are done with that tank of gas, remove the plug and check it for excess fouling.
