diabetic dog ??

I have 2 dogs, 1 is a stray, and one is a rescued, both bitches. They are both great dogs and get along like mother and daughter. http://funshare.netatronix.com/lolly-lou.jpg

Both are house trained, and have been very clean up to now (last 3 days). But the little one has been drinking a hell of a lot of water, and I do mean a lot. And peeing, flooding out the kitchen floor, something she has never done in the 3 years I have had her. She is a little over weight for her size, but she is a little gannet, (eat everything, and anything she see’s) I think this stems from before I got her as she was ill treated. She is booked in the vet’s for Sunday next. But would I be right in thinking this may be diabetes, as I have never heard of a diabetic dog, or would you think this could be something else. Many thanks in advance for your responses.

Dogs can certainly be diabetic, and frequent urination is one symptom. We had a diabetic cat, and what we first noticed was how often she visited the litter box. She did quite well for many years on her daily insulin injection. Your vet will do the proper diagnosis, and tell you how to proceed, I'm sure.

Although it's very technical in nature, the Merck Online Veterinary Manual describes diabetes. If you read the section on diabetes, it mentions both polydipsia (frequent drinking), and polyuria (frequent urination) as symptoms. You mention both of these in your dog, so diabetes is a possibility. However, this is meant as a suggestion only - only your vet can examine and diagnose your dog's problem.

    Good luck with your pet.

With the newer types of insulin these days, diabetic diets aren't necessarily as restrictive as they used to be. Read here https://tr.im/VSmAq

As with any medicine or diet change, you should discuss it with your doctor. Fruits, both fresh and dried, have a natural sugar in them that will raise blood sugar levels, so be careful about eating too much. Not sure about the nuts. Moderation is always the key. I've been diabetic for 18 years and just recently changed insulin types. I love it because it gives me more freedom in when and what I eat.

    #1 Food That Reverses Diabetes - http://diabetes.neatprim.com/

  • Yes, unfortunately dogs as well as people can be diabetics. Uncontrolled thirst/hunger can certainly be bad signs. I don't think I would wait until next Sunday to see your vet. I would call him now and insist on being seen, now, or take the dog to your emergency vet. Good luck

a diabetic is a pretty good thought. cardinal signs of a diabetic dog: eat a lot, drink a lot, looses weight. there can be other things wrong, renal disease ranks up there pretty high also (causes excessive drinking, urinating). if she is a diabetic, she can be treated with insulin and diet.

It very well could be diabetes that is how we found out about our cat. Your best bet is to keep your vet appt or have it moved up if possable.

diabetes if that is what it is, is farily easy to handle in a pet. if she does test posative make sure to talk to your vet about all avaliable diet changes for her, including the RX food all the way to changing her to a Raw diet to reduce her carb intake even more.
