Designing experiment with fishing poles?

Question

If I wanted to design an experiement that tested 2 different fishing poles, and wanted to see which one cast the furthest, how would I design it so all the errors were minimized or eliminated? 

Here is what I came up with so far...

to do the exp where there are no wind conditions
to cast onto a surface where it will not bounce
to automate some kind of arm to take out the human element

what others are there? How could I come up with a randomized order? And how do I verify the response? And how do I design it so it can be reproduced?

That sounds good but isn't really going to be helpful.

Just because one pole maybe  case better at one angle and power compare to another doesn't mean it's better.  you could change the angle or the power and the other pole might start to casting better.

To me all you really need to do is go out and case the pole by hand few hundred times at different angles and powers to try to find its peak and its adverage. Maybe get someone to help you and both can test a pole then change. This would give you more information.

I think there is an easy way to perform this experiment by eleminating all variables.

I would remove the reel from both poles.  Then measure out an equal length of the same strength fishing line & spool it onto both reels.  Place the reel into a vice or anything to hold it steady.  Attach the free end of the fishing line to a pencil or anything cylindrical and place into a power drill with a low speed setting.  Once you power the drill it will spool the line from the reel onto the pencil and you could possibly time how quickly each reel released the fishing line.  This might indicate which reel would release the furthest when casting.  Good luck hope it was helpfull
