  • If the team asks for 10 yards on a free kick, do you have to measure?

The advice to referees talk about a "specific and compelling reason" to delay the restart, one example is if the team taking the restart ask for an enforcement of the minimum distance. Does this mean any time that team asks for 10 yards I as the referee must enforce it? If I can clearly see that the opponents are 10+ yards away from the ball, do I still have to stall the restart to enforce it, or can I allow a quick restart?

  • Are there specific instances of sports injuries due to taped-over earrings?

My curiosity got the better of me and I've been searching the interwebs to find stories about sports injuries that occurred because a player did not remove his/her earrings and instead taped over them. I however have not been able to find any info that injuries have still happened.

Can anyone give me a news clip or web page that supports the argument that taping over earrings does not make it safe? Personal experiences will work too, but just saying they are not allowed or what can happen does not help my argument.

  • Are there limits on the noise levels in theaters?

Just saw Man of Steel in IMAX, and it was deafening. I don't know how loud it was but it was definitely louder than my work, which requires ear protection. Are there any industry standards on continuous noise levels or maximum noise level for movie theaters? I was kinda scared that my ears were pounding from the movie itself.

For reference, OSHA states that if you're exposed to 85 dB levels continuous for 8 hours, you need ear protection. 2 hours at 100 dB also require protection, and any impulsive or impact noise above 140 dB is not permitted.

Besides, don't people work at movie theater? Therefore OSHA guidelines would apply?

  • How do you remove the surrounding noise level when calculating sound levels for a motor?

I need to sample sound levels of a motor. However, in our workplace there are machines and other workstations surrounding where I need to collect data. I think I can assume that the noises are constant and at the same level throughout the collection period.

Is it possible for me to take measurements before the motor starts, while the motor is running, and after the motor stops, and use that data to calculate how loud the motor is?

If so, what would be the formula to do this?

Unless someone says otherwise, I will take the average of the two measurements before and after the motor runs as the surrounding noise level.

I understand that decibels follow a logarithmic scale, so I just can't do 60dB - 40dB = 20dB. I think I understand what Wikipedia is saying, however I just want to make sure I can do this properly. If this won't work, please let me know because I can see about moving the test to a quieter place.

  • What is the maximum flow through a small diameter?

I am trying to figure out how much fluid can move through a small opening. The opening varies between .245" and .250" diameter, so just these high and low values I will use. Pressure is at 2000 psi. It is supposed to be able to handle 1.1gpm, but I am seeing numbers below that. I want to know if it is the small opening that is restricting the flow because this seems to be the only possibility for why this is happening. I have switched out all the parts for this hydraulic unit, but the only thing that made a difference was the aluminum block with several of these .250" holes.

  • What is impeding in soccer?

Did my first travel game and the kids were constantly asking for obstruction. I saw none, but maybe my definition of impeding is different than what it should be.

For example, a player kicks the ball and tries to run toward it. However two defenders are in front of him and do not react quickly enough to the ball being kicked. As such the kicker is forced to either plow his way through the two defenders or go around them, losing valuable time and the ball as well. Would this be impeding?

Another example: A player tries to receive a ball, but a defender moves in between the ball and the attacker. The defender shields the ball until the goalkeeper can pick it up. At what point are you playing the person instead of playing the ball?

How far away do you need to be in order for you to not be within playing distance? An arm's length? Body length? Must you be able to touch the ball? The classes that I have taken have not really been very definitive in an answer. So I ask you, Yahoo! Answers community: what defines impeding?

  • Foul and misconduct situations for ref?

It feels a little awkward that I'm asking for help in a section that I have been contributing to a lot, but circumstances have changed.

I've been doing AYSO for the past 9 years, and I just dived into the world of USSF and travel soccer. My god is it completely different! Rec and travel soccer, even at the same age group, is vastly different. Needless to say I stunk at my first travel games.

I had difficulty controlling the players. I was able to ask one to stop grabbing jerseys, which he did. But the kids were aggressive and at this level, every touch of the ball there is a potential foul. I could've called pushing or charging every minute, but I shouldn't. But then it gets to the point where it is so painfully obvious that it starts to fall under misconduct. I had a U10 (a 10-year old!) throw another player down to the ground! Another two players were pushing each other so much that I had to step in. It makes me wonder, "what did I do to let it get this bad?"

In AYSO, I was able to get through each game with only a couple fouls and no problems at all. I've never had to deal with unruly players.

So my question to the Yahoo! Answers community is: do you have ideas or tips on how to keep the game in check? Also what do you do when a player is starting to play recklessly?

  • I have a fever and slight upset stomach, what is wrong?

These past 2 days I have had a fever slowly come as the day progresses. Right now, at 9:45pm, I have a fever, cold chills, and a slight upset stomach. In the mornings though, I do not have a fever, although the upset stomach is still there. My fever last checked was 101.5F. I don't think it is the flu or a cold, because my throat, nose, and sinuses have been fine. I know it is an infection, though, because otherwise I wouldn't have a fever.

    Any ideas?

  • What is the proper title to call someone when they have more than one position?

For example, reading a yahoo article, many of the presidential candidates have doctorates (mostly in law). If they are attorneys, why do we not call them "doctors" due to their doctorate degree?

Another side of this, Ron Paul is a medical doctor, but is also a U.S. Congressman. How would we address him formally? Does his seat in Congress take precedence over his M.D.?

Overall, what is the proper way to address a person like these?
