  • Is this money taxable ?

Weird question, but hopefully not too complex for those who know these things.

My good friend started a small business, and was doing pretty well with it. Just him, no employees. He asked me if I wanted in (mainly financially), and I trust him and said yes. We did not have a legally binding arrangement. If we made money, great, I would benefit in years to come.

Things were going well, and business was growing. We did not pay ourselves but just kept investing in the business. He did the bulk of the work, but I also put in hundreds (thousands?) of hours across perhaps 1.5 years. He got married, moved, covid hit, priorities changed. He decided to close up shop. He paid me back the money I had chipped in, plus an extra amount.

Is this extra money taxable? Can it be viewed as a gift? I’m not worried about the government coming knocking for it, but I want to do the right thing.

  • Capital losses and gains, short term and long term?

    So, here’s the scoop.

I have some short term capital losses that I’ve been carrying forward at the $3,000 per year amount. I have some long term (unrealized) capital losses, also. This year, I expect to have a fairly large amount of short term capital gains.

    My question is threefold:

    1. If I realize my long term capital loss, will it offset dollar for dollar my short term capital gain?

    2. Am I able to accelerate the usage of the prior short term capital loss? Meaning use the full sum at once, rather than just $3,000 per year.

    3. What are some easy ways to legally avoid or defer short term capital gains taxes?

  • Ransomware from USB/Thumb Drive?

If a USB/Thumb drive has ransomware on it, and it gets plugged into a computer and infects the computer, does the ransomware virus stay on the USB drive?

Basically, I was backing some things up on my work computer last week, and I used an old thumb drive from home. The thumb drive already had stuff on it. When we came in to work today, our Terminal Server had ransomware on it. I just scanned the thumb drive to see if that might be where the trojan came from, but it s clean. It could be complete coincidence, but I m wondering if I might have inadvertently infected the system at work. My work computer is fine - it s just the server and a Netgear drive that got infected - but I m trying to put my mind at ease that I m not the one who caused this issue.

  • Paperwork to sign at end of lease (with GM Financial)?

I have a lease (my first) that is going to be up soon.

Technically, my car was in an accident - as I hit a five gallon bucket in the middle of the expressway.

I replaced the most glaring damage, and was hoping to get by without the rest of the (inconsequential, to me) damage being noticed by whomever checks over the car when it s turned in.

All that being said, I m wondering whether I ll have to sign paperwork that states that the vehicle was never in an accident.

I m an honest guy, and my conscience will not allow me to sign it, if that s the case.

  • When I transfer a balance to a credit card?

I am thinking of transferring a balance to my Capital One Cash Rewards card, but am wondering how that will affect my current usage of the card. The transfer fee is decent -- 2%, but I currently use the card for daily purchases (for the Cash Rewards), and then pay it off. If I transfer a balance (which will carry 0% interest for 1 year), then make purchases that I will want to pay off quickly (lest they accrue interest), will this mess up my ability to monthly pay off the interest bearing portion?

  • Bathtub installation in mortar bed?

I had a company install my bathtub and do some tile work. Per our contract, they were to install the tub on a mortar bed, and the tub was to be level (obviously). They did neither. The level isn't off enough to be of great concern, but the way the tub was installed, the feet of the tub (or at leas some of them) aren't even touching the floor. This is visibile through the plumbing access -- else we would never have known. Long story short, we were able to get a partial refund for the shoddy job, and are attempting to fix this ourselves. Rather than remove the unsupported tub (and all that that would involve) we are taking out part of the wall that's behind the tub (that room hasn't been finished yet anyway) and are going to attempt to push mud under from the back side -- there's not enough room through the access. I say all that to ask this question: What is the recommended/best mud/mortar/cement/whatever to use in this situation? Obviously we want something that won't set up on us too quickly -- while we are trying to get everything situated in this awkward scenario. Thoughts/answers appreciated.

  • over the counter ear drops?

I have a constant ringing in my ear, as well as a lot of discharge. I don't know if some cotton (from a qtip) or something has gotten stuck in there or what is going on. It's getting really annoying though, so I'm wondering if there are otc ear drops that would help clean it out or something. I don't want anything that would run the risk of damaging my inner ear though... Thanks

  • Priming engine before startup?

How soon before you start a crate engine must you have primed it? Basically, if I prime the oil pump well this weekend, but don't start it till next weekend, will I have a problem?

  • Oil not getting to the front of engine?

I recently put an engine that I got off Ebay into my s10. (it's a sbc 400) We fired it up, and have at least two problems: first, as reflected in an earlier question, the flywheel wobbles quite a bit. I got a new one, thinking that perhaps the old one was warped, but it stayed the same. Second, there was a periodic metal-on-metal noise. Anyway, I thought maybe the crank was bent or something- as I don't know what else would be the problem with the flywheel- so we ended up pulling the engine and taking off the oil pan. We found that no oil was getting to the front two rod bearings and front main bearing- thus causing them to wear against the crank (the metal-on-metal noise). Thus, my problem is multi-pronged: What could be causing the lack of oil, and is the flywheel wobble somehow related to this, or is that something else?

  • Wiring diagram for '95 lumina?

I need to know where I can get a diagram for the wiring between the ECM and the dash temperature gauge on a '95 Chevy Lumina, 3.1L. Or, if I put an after-market temp gauge in (cause mine is broken) will it mess something up since there is nowhere to plug in the plug for the temp sensor?

  • Question about pension payments?

I am in the iupat union and we have a pension plan. My question is basically two-fold. 1. Can a person 'retire' with, say, only ten years of service? 2.And, if so, will they be eligible to receive a pension payment (obviously it would be smaller)? Or do you need to work thirty years or whatever before you are eligible for retirement and pension payments?
