    f = number of $5 bills

    t = number of $20 bills

    -----------------------------

    A bank teller has 51 $20 and $5

    f + t  = 51

    Multiply both sides by 5

    5f + 5t = 255      Eq 1

    --------------------

    value of the bills is $510

    5f + 20t = 510      Eq 2

    --------------------

    Subtract Eq 1 from Eq 2

       5f + 20t = 510

    - (5f +  5t = 255)

    –––––––––––––––––

              15t = 255

    Divide both sides by 15

    t = 17 <–––––––

    Make X the number of $20 bills.

    Therefor 51-X is the number of $5 bills.

    20X + 5(51-X) = 510

    20X + 255 - 5X = 510

    15X + 255 = 510

    15X = 510 - 255

    15X = 255

    X = 17

    17 $20 bills
