There has been a great deal of discussion about the scale and proportional ratios used in the design of the Parthenon. Some scholars say that none of the proportional ratios was used, while others point to their obvious inclusion throughout the design. Regardless, this piece of architecture displays a timeless design that many have evaluated throughout history. Discuss how the Parthenon’s design relates to at least four of the artistic principles explored in this chapter, namely scale, scale and meaning, hierarchical scale, distorted scale, proportion, human proportion, the Golden Section, and proportional ratios.

we aren't going to do homework of this scale for you ... teacher wants you to discover the scale and proportions of the building and then apply the concepts. This is a test of your understanding of the concepts -- and you were the one who read your text and listened to your lectures. We did not. Hint: an overwhelmingly large building is intended to awe the viewer. And the Parthenon had to be big enough to contain the statue of Athena, in proper scale to the observer and building. [the statue was originally plated in solid gold since the building was the treasury of the Delos League of cities.] {The statue of Athena was originally about 8 times the size of an ordinary man.}
