To be a king or a reigning monarch, one has to be in the line of succession and INHERIT the position. Philip was not heir to the throne although he was in line of succession to the throne. Elizabeth was the heir to the throne of her father, George VI.

In the UK, men do not assume the titles and status of their wives, they have their own. So, the husband of a queen regnant, the reigning monarch, is not called king consort or king. The spouse of a queen regnant is her consort with no powers to reign, and uses his own titles.

Prince Philip was born a Prince of Greece and Denmark. He gave up his foreign titles to become a naturalized British citizen. His father-in-law made him a royal duke, earl, and baron. Philip's wife, Elizabeth, bestowed him a Prince of the United Kingdom, his chosen title, after a long debate on what his titles would be.

Philip is a family member of Elizabeth's, a second and third cousin of his wife's; he was way too far down the line of succession to ever inherit.

This is a frequently asked and answered question; here is another:

The only way to be a king is to be the oldest son of the previous monarch.

But there are two ways to be queen: get married to a king, of be the daughter of the previous monarch, in the absence of a future king. Elisabeth was queen only by virtue of not having a brother.

He married into the royal family. They had a problem with the first female monarch she never married cause she didn't want to lose her power. Well that effects succession of the monarch. So they change the laws so a Royal queen could narry

  • Because the Queen was the descendant of the King whereas Prince Phillip was son-in-law.

I think you have to be born king, not married into it.
