What causes only one finger nail to be breaking ,splitting and full of cracks ?

One of my finger nails has been this way for over a year !

    Perhaps you use that fingernail more than the other ones.  Otherwise, disorders like that can take a while or even years to appear in your other nails.

    I've had that occasionally over many years. Not always the same nail. At the moment it's my left pinkie, but a couple of years ago it was my right thumb.

    On only one occasion could I find a connection to a trauma (tip of finger caught in dog's lead and painfully yanked). The rest of the time it does seem to be random.Now whenever I 'm just sitting around - watching TV maybe - I keep a small tube of a strong nail moisturising cream around, and just sit massaging a tiny drop of it into the nail and the cracked tip.
