How do minor league baseball players survive on such a tiny salary?

The players for the Double A team in my city only make around 8 grand a season.

Even if they just play 3 night games and one Sunday afternoon game per week, I don't know where they would have time to work a regular job because they also have training, and every other week they are on the road for away games.

So its not as simple as working a 9-5 job, and then driving to the stadium to play baseball.

Even during the off seasons it seems like that would be difficult to work full time, because what employer wants to hire someone who is unavailable during the spring and summer months?

Do all these guys have working spouses who support them, while they get to go out and play ball?

Multiple roommates, very little furniture, no luxuries whatsoever during the season.

Source(s): One of my best friends from college played Rookie / A ball in 2019.
  • They don't survive.  Most of them are single and usually live 4-5 in an apartment or have a billet family host them.

There's no way for them to work another job.  Most would do better working at a minimum wage job.

A lot of them share accommodations often exceeding the number allowed on a lease. The also take jobe that can fir into their scheduoles like driving for Uber, Lyft, Door Dash or the like. They may also economize by skipping some meals.

Remember the Crash Davis' of the world are the outliers.  I remember reading that the average age of a minor league player in 2018 was around 21 or 22 years old.

Taking that into account, many treat it in the same way other adults the same age treat college and graduate school, a time of sacrifice and (sometimes) dependence on others in hopes of eventually making big returns.

Just like the university years for others, some are still supported by parents, some get seasonal work, some scrape by eating lots of ramen and living with 5 other guys in a two bedroom apartment.  Remember also that the cost of living in minor league cities tends to be much lower than in major league ones.

They don't earn a wage a person can live on even in Triple-A, and by the time they reach that level, they're often married with young children.

How do they get by? They have seasonal jobs, working spouses, and a dream worth sacrificing for. Not to mention that playing for a major league team guarantees them more than $500,000 a year.
