Will they ask for a reference off my current employer? ?

I am starting this new job and I didn't use my current employer as a reference as I hadn't told them. Will they ask for one off them?

They will probably understand why you don't want your current employer to be contacted.  It should not be an issue.

The reference check is done prior to onboarding and not after

The new employer would not have offered you the job if they first wanted a reference from your last employer

No.  If they wanted a reference from your current employer they would have asked you before offering you the job.

Normally references are checked before they offer you the job, but no one here knows what your new employer will or won't do.

It's *from* them not *off* them.

They may not.  It is possible they may want a reference, but not necessary specify from your existing employer.
