Latitude implies the geographic coordinates that determine the distance of a point, north-south of the equator. Longitude alludes to the geographic coordinate, which identifies the distance of a point, east-west of the Prime Meridian.

Latitude and longitude are a system of lines used to describe the location of any place on Earth. Lines of latitude run in an east-west direction across Earth. Lines of longitude run in a north-south direction. Although these are only imaginary lines, they appear on maps and globes as if they actually existed.

Lines of longitude , or meridians,  circle the Earth from North to South , or South to North. They all meet at the poles.  They all divide the Earth into two equal hemispheres. They set time by the hour.

Lines of latitude are concentric circles. ,with the centre being the Earth's polar axis.

They decrease in size from the Equator, which fully divides the Earth in to two equal hemispheres, to a 'dot/point' at the poles. They set the height of the Sun by elevation.

We humans have created an imaginary line that runs around the planet left to right or right to left if you prefer. We call it the equator and say it is 0° latitude as you move away from the equator north or south your latitude increases and is given in degrees (°) and must also say north or south. Each of the poles is at the greatest latitute. The North Pole is 90° North and the South Pole is 90° South.

Longitude is at 90° to latitude and is based on an imaginary line running north to south between the two poles and passing through Greenwich in London, UK. It is called the Prime Meridian and is said to be 0° latitude. You can move east or west of it. East takes you across Europe and then Asia. West over the Atlantic and to the Americas. As you move either way your latitude is measured in degrees (°) east or west. When you reach roughly 180° either way you reach another imaginary line running between the two poles and roughly through the Pacific Ocean called the International Date Line.

Every location on Earth can be given by stating its latitude first then it longitude. For greater precision degrees are divided into minutes and they into seconds. For example, Charing Cross, considered to be the centre of Londin, in the UK, has the following location: 51° 30' 28" N 0° 7' 18" W. Which means its latitude is 51° 30' 28" north of the Equator. Its latitude is slightly to the west of the prime meridian.

longitude is between 180 degrees west and 180 degrees east relative to (usually) the greenwhich meridian

latitude is between 90 degrees north and 90 degrees south, relative to the equator

Longitude lines are the vertical lines on a map or globe.  They run from the north pole to the south pole.  0 degrees longitude was arbitrarily set as the line that runs through the Greenwich Observatory in London, and 180 degrees is on the opposite side of the globe - mostly in the Pacific Ocean.

Latitude lines are a series of horizontal lines that run parallel to the equator.  Since the earth has no east pole nor west pole, the equator is set as 0 degrees.  The north pole and south pole are 90 and -90 degrees, respectively.

Latitude changes as you go north and south. Longitude changes as you go east and west.
