Should tipping be banned at restaurants and just let the establishment charge the right price up front?

Seriously folks. This is some bullshyt. Why don't the restaurants just charge the extra 10-15% up front? If the server performs poorly then let the management manage that. Why should the customer have to do a performance review, calculate wages, and evaluate an employee bonus when he/or she just came out to dine.

Update:

I'm not saying just not tip the server if there is no other means in place for them to compensated fairly. I'm saying change the system and have all tipping eliminated. The department of labor can require this.

Quit being a crybaby and leave a tip for the server. The government doesn't need to be in every corner of our lives.

Since  many places around the world can run a good restaurant without tipping, USA can do it too. Many other heavily  customer based establishments run just fine without tips.

I don’t think you would get any extra attention from a waiter or waitress if they didn’t work for tips, what would be the incentive?

Tim Hortons can not give tips, unless you know them and sneak it to them

Tipping should be like it is outside the US - employers have to pay a proper wage, and tips are on top, and optional, as a reward for good service.

I would agree with you.  However to just not tip leaves the server at a loss, so I do not know how to change the system.

I'm on board with this 1000%. As a former server myself I would much rather have been paid a salary from management that reflected a 15-20% tip of my customers than to wait hand and foot on people who far too often didn't leave a dime. The management should charge the customer and the management should pay the employees. No other business in America works like this.
