Define "short distance."  They are more costly to operate, and can only go short distances at relatively slow speeds.  Some jets can fly almost four times faster than copters.

They can be used for short distance flights not everyone wants to ride in a helicopter though most people would prefer a jet it's all about the person and how much money they have but yes you can use helicopter for short distant travel
