Is getting a tattoo a bad idea?

I've thought about getting one.  But they say it's not a good idea.  What's your opinion?

I can only tell you what my thoughts through the years of growing older have been. What I was passionate about 10, 20, and 30 years ago, no longer holds. In fact, my past passions and causes just make me smile and cause a tad of embarrassment. Now, I think the only tattoo I would get is a symbol of my ancestors' country. However, I wouldn't have thought of that years ago.

In any event, you do have the option for removal. This is a fairly recent remedy. Just make sure you have funds set aside should you decide you want your tattoo erased.

One more thing: try a temporary tattoo or two or three. I put one on at a pre-wedding party because all the guests were doing it. It was fun and I felt a bit wild, but then the thing would not come off after three weeks, and it ceased to be fun.

Getting a tattoo when I was in the Royal Navy was a hazardous business.

Not because it was difficult to find anyone to do it, there were plenty of places around, but, if you got one and it went wrong and became infected, you were on a charge immediately.

You had made yourself "unfit for duty" which was a serious issue.

Naval punishment was a damn sight harsher than what is meted out in "civvy street" and was to be avoided at all costs.

Infection might come from a dirty needle or it might come from your daily activity or training.

It didn't matter, you were on a charge!

Years later after a working life in a skin clinic in a major hospital, I can only say that having witnessed some really horrible infected tattoos (on a weekly basis) I would never recommend having a tattoo to anyone.

Injecting a dye into your skin for the sake of vanity is stupid beyond belief.

It makes treating later skin conditions more difficult, makes that portion of the skin more susceptible to damage by UV light (age wrinkles) and opens the door to skin cancer.

Getting a tattoo is the hallmark of idiocy!

Take a look at all the "celebrities" who sport them such as David Beckham.

He may be able to kick a bag of wind around a football pitch but he has the mental agility of a baboon (or even less than that).

Try using your brain instead of just your eyes.

Tattoos are just plain stupid and ugly!

Why not take a look at the article on the website below which discusses tattoos.

Oh shut up Richard you look and sound absolutely retarded. Getting a tattoo is a great idea because it’s a cool way to have art on your body/something that symbolizes or means something to you

If you like tattoos and are prepared to commit to having a tattoo, it is a great idea. The level of talented artists is excellent and the equipment and ink are state of the art today.  Just look around and you'll see the popularity remains high.  My best advice is make the decision based on your thoughts, not the feelings of others.

It depends on what kind of tattoo you get and if you have laws in your country about it. If you will get an offensive tattoo or if your work/school does not allow it, it is surely a bad idea. I don't have tattoos and not planning to get any. But I don't judge them. I believe it should reflect who you are; not because someone you idolise tattooed that symbol, name, pattern, or number. You can tattooed anything that depicts your relationship with your girlfriend once you already marry her. Otherwise, it will be a turn off to your next girlfriend if you broke up.

Some day you will grow up and look at that ugly, distorted, washed-out stamp and wonder why you were stupid enough to deface your body with a permanent marking.  You will also realize why it is hard for you to land a high-level professional/managerial job.
