TAX FILING QUESTION...My teen made $1100 in 2017 on W2. She made $1200 in dividends& cap gains.Getting a $70 tax refund check?! Sound right?

    She is subject to kiddie tax.

    (2 years ago she was in a near-fatal car accident. She is fine now, thank God, but the at-fault driver's insurance co. awarded her a settlement, (which she is investing for graduate school expenses)... She has a 1099-DIV form, with total of dividends and capital gains at around $1200. It just seems odd that she should be getting ANY refund check; shouldn't she owe on those dividends, or did she just earn so little (in total) that it doesn't matter?

    She is single (18)...
