Try earlier bedtime. Kids who are overtired get into a pattern of having difficulty falling asleep, and therefore staying overtired. That is because they are basically running on cortisol during the day, which revs you up. When they lay down, they are still revved up and have a hard time unwinding to sleep. Earlier bedtime seems counterintuitive, but sometimes can help get out of that pattern. Overtired kids are also very commonly irritable and sensitive, so the drama and crying are probably normal for the situation. Make a clear bedtime routine which is soothing and the same every night if you don't have that. Also avoid screens for at least an hour before bed (any sort of screen - TV, computer, phone) because the light can disrupt sleep patterns. You have to stay with the new pattern for a period of a few weeks probably before you see much difference, if this is something that has gone on for a long time. If nothing is changing consider talking with the pediatrician just to rule out any issues.

Wow. I hope this gets better for you. I was fortunate for this not to happen for me.
