How is college after the military?

If my grades are average (2.5 GPA) and I join the navy for 5 years. Would those in the admissions office look at my high school grades from 5 years ago? Is it possible for me to go to a university?

You will need to submit your HS records and SAT scores. However, many colleges will more heavily weight your military service than your HS grades. For example, I had a student I knew who had your HS GPA and military service, and got into Hofstra - a uni that normally would not have admitted him right out of high school.

In addition, some of what you do in the military, you may be able to get college credit for. You can also take college classes while you serve, which may allow (if you take enough of them) you to apply to colleges as a transfer student, rather than a freshman. Most colleges won't want your HS records if you're a transfer student.

Talk to the folks in the education center on your base, once you're settled into the military. They can guide you in all this.

    Samuel,

It really depends on the school. Community colleges are practically open admissions. Ivy League, Stanford, Duke, Rice, etc. will require a much higher GPA. You can go to any college list or each college itself to find out admission requirements.

Also, please see my Yahoo Best Answer in the link below. The questioner is asking about citizenship, but please disregard that part for your question. The answer that I give is broader and covers your question.

My Best Answer is longer than most answers you get here, but it will still take less than five minutes to read.

    Good luck,

    Michael

It can depend on your SATS and ACTs as you should have taken them. You can also take a few classes while in using the Tuition Assistance as well as CLEP and Dantes. When you can go to a counselor at the base Education Center so you can see options.

If you are entering as a freshman, you will need to submit your high school grades. But there are plenty of universities you can get accepted to. If you want to go somewhere highly selective (i.e. Ivy league, MIT, etcetera) you'd need to go to community college for a year so you can use the college grades (assuming you do well) to apply for the university.

You would take SAT or ACT. That aptitude test would count heavily in addition to your grades and recommendations. Your military service would be favored at some universities.
