You could ask the same of food, water or shelter.

They are all commodities of sorts.

In a sustainable, stable, safe society, they are commodities that it makes social and economic sense to make available to the whole population, at least to a minimum level.

In the UK and in many other parts of the world, there is a form of tax-funded universal healthcare. For many people, it proves perfectly adequate. No one, whether a taxpayer or even whether a citizen, will be denied emergency health care. That, to us, is a mark of a civilised country.

What it can never be is all things to all people. There are waiting list for non-emergency hospital treatments and there is some rationing of services where the need is not considered serious or pressing. Those who have private medical insurance or personal wealth can have private medical treatment in the parallel private healthcare sector.

No one is compelled to use the tax-funded healthcare system though all UK taxpayers contribute to it. We consider it part of our social responsibility.
