What is the best type of grass seed for me?

I live in Galloway Ohio, a suburb of Columbus. I need something really, really tough. My dogs are big and love to run around and make trails all through my lawn. I used the toughest seed Walmart had, (I talked to one of their employees). It lasted for about a month before my dogs completely destroyed it. We also went to a local farmers market and used their toughest seed. It lasted about a month. Another thing, that was when I was taking care of the lawn. My kid wants to try and take care of it so it also needs to be able to survive basically any environment. Okay, so now that we have toughness established, it needs to be soft. Our neighbors had a nice soft grass that I fell asleep on all the time, (We were best friends and we would talk all night on the grass). Ideally, the grass would grow from spring to fall. Thank you for taking the time to answer this question well. I appreciate you not insulting me in the answers as this has happened before. I really appreciate the hard work that you put into your answer. Thanks!

Jonathon Green Black Beauty Fescue or Zoysia grass. But you need to keep the dogs off till established. The thing is you need a good turf. Now if you water and fertilize a lot you will have weak turf. Think of athletes, do they lounge around and eat deserts and chug beer, no they practice and strive. You must do the same with lawn. Leave cuttings and that should be enough fertilizer and only water if absolutely necessary. I've watered twice in 36 years. I fertilize every 5 or 6 years. I never poison lawn. I spot kill some weeds. Once you have a strong lawn it is hard to kill. Of course it doesn't hurt to "overseed" in the spring. Also clover is beneficial as it draws beneficial insects which drive away bad insects. Go to Safelawn.org for more info. Remember, if you listen to that actor with the Scottish accent and pamper your lawn it will remain weak.

Sorry to tell you, there is no such thing as a grass variety that will be able to hold up to regular, daily activity by multiple large dogs.

The most successful dog-proofing I've seen has been planting shrubs back away from the fences, as the dogs love to run back and forth there. They laid down mulch, which they renewed periodically, and had raised shrub beds place in a way that didn't interfere with the dog-paths. They also encorporated a dog path or two through the landscape, and made them into non-lawn pathways, using mulch.

Basically there are two types of grass like warm season seeds and cool season seeds. Warm season seeds originates in south and grow best in warm weather. Cool season seeds originates in north and is characterized by rapid growth in the spring and fall.
