Is it safe for dogs to eat uncooked oatmeal (oats)?

I'm making treats and want to use oats for texture. I know cooking it is safe but if left raw or uncooked, is that safe? I'm concerned the oats will swell in their stomachs from acid or liquids.

you are right, uncooked oats will swell

a better plan is to get something like McCann's steel cut (not rolled) and cook them at least 1/2 way, then add this to your treats... still have texture without as much risk

Oats, flaked, as sold in packets are a very good source of iron. Packet oat flakes are already pre-cooked during the flaking but soak overnight in cold milk or cold watered milk if feeding as part of a meal.

In the wild hair and under skin are part of a natural flesh diet and supply essential roughage to exercise the strong muscles of the digestive tract. Bran supplied this roughage and also vitamin B, it has little food value but it is of a protein nature albeit a cereal product. When bran is unobtainable we substitute with a sprinkling of raw oats.

uncooked (raw and organic) foods are the safest and easiest to digest for both humans and animals. however, we have evolved with cooked food and some dogs have had such bad diets (inorganic meat and factory biscuits - both cooked) that it will take them a while (like it does a human) to adjust. however, once they do they will be the healthiest pooches on the planet. my little poto lived over 25 years even though he started off life on a very unhealthy diet (i didn t own him then!).

Only one question in reply to your question and that is, why don't you eat dry oats like a horse would do ? see what effects it has on you practice on yourself is my motto. What I wouldn't like my pets don't get.
