Windows cannot update important updates files and services while the system is using the system. So, it is updating when you shut down. It is because, you have enabled window updates. But it will not be always be . Once the updates are installed and configured, then this update message will not run. It gets immediate shut down. If you do not want further updates, go to the Windows updates settings, depending on your operating system, you have not mentioned the os, and stop the automatic updates totally, or choose alert updates, but let me choose option. This will alert you if updates are available. You could go and select the updates you want to install. It is always better to update as threats are emerging. Even your microsoft word could be compromised with macro virus. Always updates java and adobe. your system is safe Do you know that microsoft have given about 3dozen updates for secured usage of microsoft office 2007. Because, nowaday the hackers are trying to use the vulnerability of the programs to steal your personal data by injecting trojans and malware. Even there are cookies, which is used by them when you access one page.

click in action center flag (little white flag right/ down beside battery and Windows clock) -> click on "Open Action Center" -> "change action center setting" (left) -> "Windows Update Settings" (down) -> in "Important updates" combobox check "Never check for updates" then ok.
