Malaysian lifestyle in the 20th century?

About their fashion in the 50s, 60s and etc. It would be nice if you put some highlights of each era, like rock and roll or political troubles.

PS, state any differences between all the races in fashion too. And skip the 90s.

You know, its a whole lot easier finding out about American history but Malaysian? Its all in bits and pieces and no periodical fashion book in the KL library...

Not really sure whether the influences of popular culture in America is the same in Malaysia back then...

And lastly, is it true that at one time, hippie fashion was banned in Malaysia?

Heard it online but wasn't sure...

Update:

Don't need to state our Independence day (kinda common knowledge already). But saying on how was the reaction of Malaysians in 1957 is fine.

(Based on old photos I have seen)

I would say Malaysia did not adopt the American pop culture at a similar time. There seemed to be a time lag. Perhaps, it took a few years before Malaysians adopted the American pop culture.

    1950s

You can see people wearing big wide pants and they wear it high on their waist. People tend to comb their hair back very straight.

I believe that in the US, the pop culture in the 1950s would be straight cut tight pants (look at Elvis in the 1950s wearing leather jackets and tight leather pants) (quite similar to the 1980s - later). Also the big wide pants and wear it high on their waist seemed to be the fashion of the 1930s and 1940s in the US. So, Malaysians were quite slow. The same goes to music. The local 1950s music seemed to reflect the sound of the 1930s.

    P. Ramlee began to get noticed in the 1950s.

    1960s/1970s (Hippies era)

The hippies fashion caught on fast among Malaysians. You can see a lot of Malaysians (male) wearing floral shirts (with big collars) and bell bottoms especially in the 1970s. I'm not so sure whether there are Malaysians wearing bell bottoms in the 1960s. Even Elvis has changed his fashion to wear those bell bottoms and shirts with big collars in the early 1970s. Anyway, bell bottoms (only jeans) and the floral shirt with big collars fashion made a comeback in the 1990s. Hairstyles (male) in the 1970s tend to be straight long (shoulder length) and unkempt (just like a rockstar)

Bee hives hairstyle seemed to be popular among the Malaysian females in the 1970s. Again, Malaysians adopted this fashion quite late (This is 1960s hairstyle in the US). By the 1970s, many Americans began to adopt the long straight hairstyle, like what we see today. However, this fashion does not seem to be popular among Malaysians in the 1970s. Also wearing tight jeans was popular in the 1970s (unlike today's jeans, the waist is higher in the 1970s)

Perming hair seemed to be popular in this period for both males and females.

I don't know much about the local music scene in the 1960s and 1970s. The US music scene ranges from the psychedelic rock (eg. Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton) to the slow moving pop music in those era.

    P. Ramlee gain popularity in the early 60s. By the late 60s and early 70s, P. Ramlee lost his popularity.

1980s (The new romantic era, yes, you can google it - New Romantic)

The bell bottom fashion in the US has died out by the 1980s. BUT, there are still Malaysians wearing the bell bottom pants in the 1980s. Also, there are still Malaysians wearing the floral shirts with big collars (this fashion has already died out in the west by the 1980s).

The 1980s is the new romantic era (originated from Britain). People started to wear shoulder pads, leg warmers, straight cut tight jeans, and pirate fashion shirts (big baggy sleeves just like Captain Jack Sparrow). YES, if you noticed, the jackets are quite baggy in the sleeves in the 1980s.

Only towards the late 1980s, only Malaysians began to adopt the new romantic fashion originated from Britain. You can see Malaysians wearing shoulder pads, pirate shirts and jackets, and straight cut tight jeans.

Hairstyles in the 1980s is more towards perming the hair. Curly and stylish (new romantic fashion). It's not like the 1970s anymore, which is straight, long, and unkempt. So, Malaysians continued to perm their hair.

New Romantic pop bands of the 1980s in the UK are like Duran Duran, Kajagoogoo, A Flock of Seagulls. Putting make-up is the norm for these male musicians. Not sure if there are any local bands who adopted their new romantic fashion.

The 1980s also saw the rise of Amy and his band Search. If I'm not mistaken, Search is our very first local rock band in Malaysia! Their type of music is called Rock Kapak. It basically follows the Hair Metal music (Yes, you can google Hair Metal) of the West. Eg. Bon Jovi, Scorpions, Cinderella, Hanoi Rocks, Van Halen. YES, they all put make-ups.

Hair metal hairstyle of the 1980s is basically curly, spiky and stylish. Rockers wear tight leotards/tight leather pants/tight jeans. They also wear leather jackets. Yes, many local Malaysian rockers adopted this fashion in the 1980s.

There are too many things to write....
