    The total is 521,000

    There are 229,000 MORE births than deaths.

    X = number of deaths

    X + 229,000 = number of births.

    deaths + births = 521,000

    X + (X+229,000) = 521000

    2X + 229000 = 521000

    Solve for X

    Let b be the births and let d be the deaths.

    b + 229 = d

    b + d = 521

    Substitute the first equation into the second equation

    b + (b + 229) = 521

    2b = 292

    b = 146

    If b=146, then d = 146 + 229 = 375

    375-229=146

    146+375=521

    Deaths = 146 thousand

    Births = 375 thousand

    b - d = 229,000

    b + d = 521,000

    Add those two equations:

    2b = 750,000

    b = 750,000/2

    b = 375,000

    Subtract the original two equations:

    2d = 292,000

    d = 292,000/2

    d = 146,000
