how do i solve this math problem?

i have a graph it shows the average writing scores for high school seniors

for girls

on 1998 the average writing score was 159, in 2002 it was 160

for boys

on 1998 the average writing score was 140, in 2002 it was 136

the data can be modeled by the following formula:

Girls: W = 1/4 x + 159

Boys: W = -X+140

the question:

if current trends continue, when will the average test score for girls be 49 points higher than for boys?

if anyone knows please help

thank you

    you need to solve this equation first,

    W(girls) = W(boys) +49

    substituting W's we have,

    1/4x +159 = -x +140 + 49

    5/4x=30

    x=24

    On looking it seems the x is the number of years after 1998. so, the year when the average test score for girls be 49 points higher than for boys is (1998 + 24) years = 2022 years.
