About how much will it cost to add freon to an air conditioner?
A friend of mine has two AC units and one of them isn't blowing cold air, just cool air. We're assuming she just needs some freon. About how much will that cost? I just want a general idea so I'd know if she's being screwed or not.
Thanks for the help so far. It's not an window unit. She has a huge house(like 3000 square feet) so she has a unit for upstairs and another for downstairs

If it is window units you are talking about,I would venture to say it would be better to purchase new than try and salvage old one, If it is due to a leak. The leak will need to be repaired and a pump down will need to be preformed then a refill of freon. If the poor cooling is due to worn valves a whole nother story. If compressor is not coming on maybe a start capacitor less than 30 bucks for part.At any rate a service call is in order.

San Antonio Tx. A capacitor is $19.95 plus Tax. This is for a 45 +5 440/370 Round. CD45+5X440R Rated 85 degrees celsius. Plus I got a lifetime warranty for $3. So, anytime it goes out I get a new one and just pay $3. I bought 4 with warranty because it's a 20 min drive to place to get it. It's easy to replace the capacitor in your unit. Just make sure your Fan, Common and Herm wires are set right. Make a note of the wire placement before removing. Also check out youtube for other instructions.

That is generally not the solution. A contractor will need to test the system for leaks first. If the refrigerant escaped, the system must be leaking, or it would not have escaped. It does not wear out or disappear otherwise.
