Why does my friends house cat always want to go outside?

A friend of mine has had a house cat for years. He's about 2-3 now and he's been wanting to go outside a lot. She says he "cries" if she doesn't let him out. He then stays in the backyard and makes noises all night. I'm guessing he's hit sexual maturity and wants some booty. At first she thought that noise meant he wanted to come inside. So she woke up and opened the door. When she went outside to let him in then he ran off. :p

Your theory about sexual maturity is probably correct. If an unneutered male smells the scent of a female in heat he will exhibit behaviors similar to what you describe. Tell your friend that it is very important to have him fixed! Unneutered cats will spray very stinky urine to mark their territory. She should also have him neutered just for the basic fact that there is a severe overpopulation problem within the cat community. Every year countless numbers of kittens are born homeless, are killed by predators, die of starvation or disease, or have to be euthanized. Please encourage your friend to do her part by having her male neutered. One male has the potential to impregnate many females.
