A question for atheists, secular humanists, etc...?

I have a few questions regarding the abortion debate, and I'd like to get the perspective of some people who do not believe in any sort of God. I promise I won't spin your answers into some kind of attack on your logic, or call you a heathen murderer (lol)... I'm honestly curious as to what motivates your opinion. :)

What is your position regarding the ethics surrounding the taking of another human life? (never justified? only in self-defense? free-for-all? etc...)

At what point do you think life begins, and why (genetics, human development, whatever reasoning you have used to reach that conclusion)?

What is your opinion of abortion?

I would really appreciate a few thorough answers. Thanks!

Update:

Thank you to those of you who are actually answering the three questions I asked, rather than just talking about your general opinion on the "right to choose" or whatever.

:)

    1. I am pro-choice, but against abortion. I would prefer there never be another one, but I also believe its not my place to choose on another person's behalf. I also believe the correct way to go about this is through increased education and support - easier adoptions, more government assistance, etc., than in trying to outlaw it. If we outlaw it, then all you do is create an unregulated black market that puts everyone in danger.

    2. Ethics of taking a human life: I do believe it is justified in certain instances. Serial killers, abusers, genocide/war criminals, etc. There are certain crimes which show a person's complete lack of anything remotely human.

    3. When does a fetus make the jump to "baby" in my mind? When it can survive on its own without the mother. Until that time, it is on par with any other parasitic organism (please keep #1 in mind). I think once a life form can biologically survive by itself, it deserves the opportunity to continue to do so.

Life begins before conception, we all know that. A man's sperm is quite alive. This is not the real issue. We kill life all of the time. Plants are life. Animals are life. It's a matter of which life we value.

If its essential, I think that killing someone out of self-defense is completely ok. Also, if there is CONSENT. This is very key to me. In society, we value consent. It is one of the highest values, just think of any example.

Also, it seems that we care for life only if 1) It has value, OR 2) It has a conscious experience of feeling happiness and suffering.

-- ex. 1) plants and animals, 2) Animals that clearly show a conscious experience of emotions like chimps.

So for me, abortion where the mother's health is in danger is ok because it is out of self defense. The issue I have is when a fetus that may have consciousness is killed without consent (the fetus' consent). Also, even when it doesn't have consciousness, you know that it has the potential for conscious experience so I'm still undecided on this issue.

All the people saying no one should be able to tell a mother what to do with her body seem to ignore the fact that its about what the mother is choosing to do to the baby, not her body.

    Agnostic.

I went back and forth between Pro Life and Pro Choice. I've decided that I'm Pro Choice, but I don't think ( as someone else on here said ) that a high school slut should abort a baby just because she is irresponsible. I don't think abortions should be made freely and believe me, they aren't. Even though they are legal, they are hard to get in some states.

A woman should have the ability to choose, especially in circumstances of rape, incest, or if she can not afford the baby financially. If she has a boyfriend, she can consult him on the issue since it's his kid, too, but ultimately, it's her decision.

I definitely don't think fetuses should be aborted carelessly. They could be living beings someday and things like this should be treated with care.

    1. I feel the taking of human life is always justified because people suck.

    2. I believe life begins around the second trimester of gestation, when the nervous system begins to develop.

    3. I believe abortion is murder. I am pro-abortion. I support murder in any form.

    4. Whoever gives me a thumbs down proves the point I made in #1.

  • It is wrong to take another human's life except under extreme circumstance.

I don't KNOW, but, I believe life begins when the frontal lobe of the brain develops, that is when a fetus becomes a seperate entity from it's mother. It is also when it begins to feel sensations that register, like pain.

My opinion of abortion is mixed, I couldn't do it, but, I have the choice, and I prefer it remain that way.

Self -defense is fine. That maintains a civil society.

Life begins at conception, but that's not the right question. The proper question is, "When does life become human?" That happens at the start of "free will." That only happens when the umbilical cord is cut. Everything before should be legal. That doesn't mean I think women should do have an abortion in the eighth month, but it shouldn't be illegal in the eyes of the law.

I believe that people should not have an abortion just because they made a mistake, I believe in a thing called responsibility, I do believe in certain circumstances the fetus may be aborted, (danger of the mother, or so forth) but just because some high school slut doesn't know how much a life is worth or know how to take responsibility... no I don't settle for that.

    -Atheist.

Oh and I am for Capital Punishment... you remember that thing I talked about? RESPONSIBILITY? Learn it.

Yes give me low ratings... it's not my fault failed parenting is the top contender with why there are so many teen preggos out there...

Agnostics are least understood - such a lot of folks feel they have got now not made up their brain whether or not they feel in gods or now not but while agnosticism is truthfully a strongly held view that no-you possibly can recognize whether or not gods exist or now not. I, like so much atheists, am an agnostic atheist however I determine as atheist on account that my disbelief in gods sums up my perspective greater than my incapability to grasp for certain.

A doctor who performs an abortion takes a human life! A rapist who impregnates a female gives a human life! Ask a pro-life if they would want to keep a fetus that was fertilized by a rapist alive. Especially if it was their child. Then ask a pro-choice if they wanted to keep the same fetus alive if it was theirs or one of their family members or friends. I'm pro-choice!

    ethics and justification

its justified, in the right circumstances

death is a fact of life

i wont deny it just cos soem peopel cant handle it

    what pointlife begins

man, the whole , life begins thing, i dont know, i just dont know, i cant pretend to know something that huge

its technically alive once its heart beats, its technicaly alive once its able to live and sustain itself outside the mother

but, if you believe in a soul, its also technically alive from when that happens

    i, just , dont know

    my opinion on abortion

that its not my life that will be affected by its birth and existence

its teh parents, and if they dont want, cant handle, cant have a baby, tis their right to get get an abortion

not mine to decide their lives for them

    your welcome ;-)
