Why do Fighters get Tested for Marijuana?

Ive seen some fights get overturned because the fighter tested positive for weed. I.E. Nick Diaz and Kazuhiro Nakamura (although it didn't matter because he lost that fight to Machida).

I just don't understand the reasons. It's not a physical enhancing drug like amphetamines. Makes no sense.

Update:

who gives a **** if its an illegal drug. I understand why they get tested for pain killers and amphetamines, but why should it matter if the sport is unaffected?

The main reason has been stated a few times here. Cannabis is an illegal substance in many countries and so it's presence in a fighter's system is grounds for a disqualification.

I understand what you're saying about weed not being a performance enhancer but that really isn't the point. Another point I'd like to bring to attention is that cannabis will stay in detectable levels for up to a month, so really these fighters could be penalized for one night a month before the actual fight.

Alcohol and tobacco are drugs as well. People don't rag on them because they are legal. Personally I've seen a lot more trouble caused by alcohol than pot. The rare times people smoking pot get into fights there is always alcohol involved as well. So people, lets not pull out the soap boxes and start preaching against one substance when there are many others I'm sure you've dabbled with or use regularly.

There are people who abstain from any and all drugs and that's great but you just sound close minded and uninformed when you spew stuff about people who partake being pathetic losers. Your new President admitted to smoking quite frequently in his younger days; doesn't look like it ruined his life.

well simply because marijuana is an illegal substance. Michael Phelps was just recently penalized for the same substance. Weather or not it enhances an athletes performance, It is an illegal drug, they are guilty of using an illegal substance. Oh yeah by the way, the tests that these athletes take trace anything from steroids to marijuana. mma athletes competing in the U.S. are required to take random and/or regularly drug tests

lol obv people here haven't tried weed

i understand what your saying if anything weed will be worse for the competitor to take due to the ''stoned'' affects of it.

but as they say it is illegal and you have to abide by a nation/states law.

as for the fight being overturned it would look bad if they let drugged fighters (regardless if its weed or steroids) fight in the competitions.

its got nothing to do with being low or a druggie though as people here say

countless musicians have used it to write songs (alongside acid)

countless people use it to relax or have fun.

and statistics show it is friendlier then tobacco resulting in 0 deaths from direct use.

MMA works under the Nevada Commissions, which prohibit any illegal drugs in the system of a competitor. Marijuana is illegal.

Because real winners do not need drugs. Nor do should they take them but in the MMA world you have a bunch of degenerates that do not know any better and think it is cool to do so...

In all honesty though it is an illegal drug so there for it is ILLEGAL.

They test for all illegal drugs. Whether it's physically enhancing or not they don't want to deal with druggies.

Apparently the M"MA" associations give a ****. What a dumb question.

If someone is such lowly, dumb, scum of the earth that they would do illegal drugs, do they really deserve to win anything?
