How did old mercury candles work?

My mom found some old mercury candles in my grandmothers attic. Does anyone know what these was used for or how they work?

This is what they are... the seem to be something that was used at Christmas time. They are not the same things used in rituals.

    Do you mean Mercury candle holders? I have no idea what a Mercury candle would be. They are still produced.

    Just don't burn them, whatever you do. Google "mercury candle". They were/are used for religious purposes, more or less.
